Apps For Everything: Apple Continues To Try To Improve App Discovery

Apple today has rolled out a new series of pages on the iPhone section of its website called “Apps For Everything.” The idea here is to create an easy way for consumers to find apps based around certain categories that they may be interested in.

The categories are:

  • apps for cooks
  • apps for keeping current
  • apps for the great outdoors
  • apps for music
  • apps for work
  • apps for music
  • apps for students

New Body Kit Makes Your New Prius Look Nothing Like A Prius [Tuner Cars]

Did you buy a 2010 Toyota Prius and instantly realized it didn't look as much like a HSV GTS as you hoped? Japanese car tuner Tommy Kaira has the solution for you.

These are proposed tuning packages, though the quad exhaust is already available in Japan. The new trim will also include your choice of 18-inch wheels and, of course, a lowering kit. While being closer to the ground might actually reduce drag, we're not sure if the "aero" kits will actually be more aerodynamic than theSource: Jalopnik RSS Feed

Count the beats: Tuning and more with Guitar Toolkit for iPhone / iPod touch

Filed under: Reviews, First Look, App Review, Music

Any musician worth his/her credit knows that accurate tuning is a given. It's a crucial starting point to playing any instrument at home, on the job, in the studio, or on the road, and an embarrassment when it isn't.
Some time ago I was doing an unplugged acoustic gig when my regular stomp box tuner broke down mid-rehearsal. I was in desperate need of a reliable tuner, without a music store in sight. Roll on Agile PartnersSource: The Unofficial Apple Weblog RSS Feed

Ireland trying to court Realtime Worlds, other Scottish devs with tax holiday

In an attempt to kick-start its own video game industry, Ireland has begun to target a number of high-profile Scottish game development studios, attempting to woo them over to the Emerald Isle by offering a five-year tax holiday. Colin Macdonald, manager of Dundee-based APB developer Realtime Worlds, responded by saying "if the package on offer in Ireland was attractive we'd have to give it serious consideration." Other Scottish developers who could be influenced by the tax holiday includeSource: Houstonist RSS Feed

PSP Weekend Warrior: Cool games for the "uncool" handheld

Uncool. Expensive. That's what Apple thinks of the PSP. That may well be, but thanks to TGS we heard a lot of good -- and frankly, some really bad -- news for the Sony handheld. The good news is that there are free games in store for those upgrading to the PSP Go. The bad news is that you won't be able to play your sizable collection of UMD games if you trade in your UM drive-equipped PSP just to have enough money for that darn Go.

Mass Effect 2's Subject Zero looks awfully unfriendly

Man, if you thought Mass Effect's Urdnot Wrex was an uncongenial companion, get a load of the most recently revealed cast member of Mass Effect 2: The skin-headed, sailor-mouthed Biotic known as Subject Zero. Though she may lack social graces, she more than makes for it with combat adroitness and, for lack of a better word, assertiveness. She's what Destiny's child might call an "independent woman."
Then again, she's also what Rick James might call a very kinky girl -- the kind youSource: Xbox 360 Fanboy RSS Feed

Google Maps Place Pages

When you perform a search in Google Maps and click on "more info" next to a search result, Google opens a new page that aggregates useful information about places and local businesses. Until now, Google showed an expanded bubble directly on the map.
The new Google Maps pages have user-friendly URLs like http://maps.google.com/places/fr/paris-city and they include a lot data: photos and videos from Panoramio and YouTube, user-generated maps, reviews, related web pages, information fromSource: Google Operating System RSS Feed

Archos 9 tablet due October 22 for $499

Here’s a little more info on the Archos 9 Tablet. Apparently it’ll be available here in the US on October 22nd, the same day Windows 7 is available. The price tag is pretty aggressive at $499, too.

That’ll get you an Atom Z510 CPU at 1.1GHz, a 9-inch touchscreen with 102400 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 60GB hard drive, Windows 7 Starter, four hours of battery life, and a weight of about 1.75 pounds.

UMPC Portal has a video of the device in action. Looks pretty nice. It seems a Source: CrunchGear RSS Feed

Review: Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years of tech reporting it’s that you should never say Bose makes good products. Bose, like Apple, is a lightning rod for informed and uninformed attacks from both the pro and con camps and to say they do things well – or poorly – is a dangerous proposition. That said, I’m here to tell you that if you travel a lot then you should get the QuietComfort 15 headphones.

I tested these headphones during three long overseas flights. I’veSource: CrunchGear RSS Feed

Quad-core Core i7 720QM slips into Dell Studio 15 / 17 and Studio XPS 16

Ready for some fireworks? Good. Intel's just-announced Clarksfield processor -- which was accurately rumored for a September launch way back in July -- is landing in Dell's lineup in a big way. The refreshed Studio 15 and Studio 17 will both be sold with an available Core i7 720QM or Core i7 820QM, as will the gamer-centric Studio XPS 16. As a reminder, the former checks in at 1.6GHz with a 1,333MHz FSB and 6MB of L3 cache, while the latter hums along at 1.73GHz. The Studio 17 is alsoSource: Engadget RSS Feed

Highlights from TransWorld Halloween show 2009

If you're needing inspiration for your haunted house this year, you need look no further than this video by Terra of HalloweenForum.com showing the highlights of her visit to the 2009 annual TransWorld Halloween & Attractions Show. My personal faves include a door that dents inward as an ax murderer apparently chops on it from the other side, a struggling victim chained in a box full of water, and giant vampire bats that swoop down from the ceiling.

Best Camera: ‘Like Photoshop for The iPhone’

The best camera is the one you have with you. And - possibly - the best camera software designer is a photographer. At least, that’s what Chase Jarvis hopes. Chase is the man who proves that, in the right hands, the iPhone can make an awesome camera.

Chase has collaborated on a new iPhone app called “Best Camera” which, as Strobist David Hobby told me this morning, is “like Photoshop lite for the iPhone”. Best Camera grabs pictures from you camera roll and lets you processSource: Wired RSS Feed

FireCore console pre-loaded with Genesis games, plays carts

We don't do usually cover plug-and-play consoles, but this one was too cool to pass up. While Innex and AtGames' Firecore Classic Console is pre-loaded with 30 Genesis games like Sonic and Knuckles and Ecco the Dolphin, it can also play all your old Genesis carts. We're not sure where all it's available, though you can find it on Buy.com right now for $50. The console also supports wireless Firecore gamepads, though you'll have to buy them separately, and newly developed "Truecolor"Source: Houstonist RSS Feed

Shooting for 365 MPH On Two Wheels

We aren’t quite sure how we would describe someone who gets their jollies riding a motorcycle at more than 350 mph. But Eric Manning put it best when describing his father Denis Manning — and anyone else involved in land speed racing, for that matter — as “insane or committed.” We think it’s a combination of the two.

Denis Manning has been racing motorcycles since he was 16. He’s been chasing land speed records since he was 28. Now, at the age of 62, he is leadingSource: Autopia RSS Feed

Tactile Hologram Being Developed

Scientists at a Tokyo University are making progress on Holograms that can provide tactile feedback to users touching them. By using ultrasonic waves and Wii Controllers, the system can let the holograms feel like you can touch them. It seems very similar, if not the same, to the demonstration of tactile holography we mentioned back in August as that system also used Wii Controllers and ultrasonic waves.

The Wii Controllers are used to track the position of your hand and thenSource: Gadget Venue RSS Feed

VW L1 Concept: 158 MPG Diesel Sipper [Frankfurt Motor Show]

Remember the VW 1L concept? The wacky tandem-seat diesel streamliner that returned insane mileage and made environmentalist nether regions get all tingly? It's reappearing at Frankfurt, and this time it looks like a real car.

Volkswagen has been chasing the idea of a passenger vehicle capable of traveling 100 km on 1 liter of fuel for a few years now, and this is the latest iteration of the effort, the L1. Well, it doesn't really make the 1 liter/100 km, which equates to aboutSource: Jalopnik RSS Feed

Video: Ben Heck amazes with Atari 800 laptop -- again

Of all the legacy platforms that have been massaged by modder extraordinaire Ben Heck, it seems the Atari 800 is his favorite. One got the portable treatment back in November of 2005, and he then re-worked it in late 2006. He's done it again, creating the third revision of the 8-bit luggable, completely overhauling the mod in period brownish/beige plastics, with old-school LED lights and an authentic keyboard that even pops up after the laptop is opened. Has it been ten years since we lost the Moon and all hands on Moonbase Alpha? It seems more like 30.

Sigh. So much future is already behind us. When will the present catch up to the past?

Maybe we do need to give NASA a few billion more dollars. I can think of an excellent successor to the Shuttle.

Hands-on: Halo 3: ODST Campaign

Wait. What? You mean ... My thought was suspended as I, the Rookie, was deployed in a one-man pod from a warship in orbit over New Mombasa. Here we go: I'm now an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper.
While "shock" troops denote the shocking of an enemy force, I was the one shocked. Halo 3: ODST immediately chucks its Rookie into unknown territory. You mean, the tutorial level is not a corridor crawler through a spaceship?
After a rough insertion, I awoke six hours later, dangling

5 Fast Tips to Help You Get a Break Today [WebWorkerDaily]

Have you had a break today?

It sounds simple enough, but we all know how difficult it can be to drag ourselves away from our desks during the work day. Since we’re not surrounded by colleagues heading out for lunch or coffee, and we all have a lot of work on, it can be easy to forget to take breaks. We take up a task, get stuck into it, and before we know it, we’ve missed lunch time and have just a couple of hours left to get the next couple of items off our task
