Nova DSLR concept reminds us that cameras need not be boring

Despite the distant memory that is film for most people, most DSLRs have plenty in common with their film-based ancestors, at least when it comes to form factor. Not this Nova DSLR concept. Conceived by Erin Fong, the idea is to allow for all sorts of hand holds thanks to the dual movable arms, and the controls at the fingertips seems surprisingly convenient. We're sure there are all sorts of technical limitations holding something like this back, but after suffering severe kitted-out DSLR fatigue on multiple occasions, we could really get into something that makes a bit better use of how we regularly hold our non-imaging devices. Now if someone would just clean that lens already!

Archos 5 gets Android Market, Gmail and Maps for that Google-blessed experience

Since it's not a phone and transgresses in all sorts of other Google-pleasing areas, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet hasn't had a full shot at Android thus far, being relegated to merely the open source aspects of the OS. However, with phones like the Droid out and about and making high-resolution compatibility a must for Android developers, not to mention some diligent work from the hacking community, there are now downloadable versions of Android Market, Gmail, Maps and some other Google-specific Android goodies for the Archos 5. Use them at your own risk, of course, but it's not like the Archos 5 is a testament to stability in its current incarnation anyway.

Archos releases developer edition firmware for Internet Tablets

According to a press release dated this morning, Archos is making proof-of-concept "developer edition" firmware available for its ARCHOS 5 and ARCHOS 7 Internet Media Tablets. Based on the Angstrom Linux distribution, this is by no means a commercial distro (no multimedia software) but since you're taking it upon yourself to code the next great multimedia / social networking / productivity / time travel app anyways, you don't really want to be bogged down by such pedestrian fare. According to the PR, the company "eagerly anticipates seeing its hardware platform used as a foundation for creating exciting new usage models and applications that the developer community brings." And so do we! Read all about it after the break.

Just Give Me One Modal Dialog ....

Back when I was reporting the book, I remember a meeting I had with Gary Flake, then the lead technologist at Overture, now a Fellow at Microsoft running Live Labs, responsible for stuff like Seadragon, Photosynth, and now, Pivot, an experimental approach to large datasets that attempts to rethink some fundamental approaches to what we understand search to be today.

Back in 2004, I asked him why we couldn't move forward in search interface, which struck me as a major issue (and stillSource: John Battelle's Searchblog RSS Feed

AOL Reveals Lame New Look & Logo [GigaOM]

AOL will launch a new look and logo along with its official spinout from Time Warner on Dec. 10, as it tries to become a content-centric company. Wolff Olins, a global brand and innovation consultancy, worked on this new look and logo which seeks to replace the older, more iconic AOL branding. The minute I saw the logo (and its various interpretations), my first reaction was simple: lame. It is ambiguous at best, and as sexy as the obese, shapeless humans living on Axiom, the flagship of theSource: GigaOM Network RSS Feed

ROCCAT Apuri USB Hub Loves Your Wired Mouse Cable

If you dig the gaming device design style you can definitely look at ROCCAT's line to get ideas. Their latest is the Apuri, a USB hub with 4 easily accessible USB 2.0 ports. The space-age hub stands on 3 legs looking like something out of War of the Worlds. The Apuri's high posture allows it manage cables cleanly. We're pretty sure it's more to look cool than for function though. There's a special abduction style LED light beaming down from the under belly of the hub just for effect.Source: Everything USB RSS Feed

Six Blu-ray players reviewed

The war between the two new generation high definition digital media formats was raging couple of years ago. The war ended in February 2008 and Blu-ray was crowned the winner after Toshiba quit manufacturing HD DVD deviced. Now almost two years later the HD player market has far more products and prices are dropping steadily. Soon the prices are low enough for an Average Joe to compare the Blu-ray players with the fancy blue laser technology and dated DVD players.

Sorry, Goers: LittleBigPlanet PSP still unavailable for PSN download

When the PSP Go was first announced, Sony focused much of its promotion of the new digital distribution model on one upcoming title for the portable platform: LittleBigPlanet. Unfortunately, those who bought a Go with visions of downloadable Sackboys dancing in their heads are probably feeling awfully jilted at the moment. See, though the UMD version of the game has been available since yesterday, the customizable platformer still hasn't hopped onto the PlayStation Store.

The concept of Blinds doubling up as Solar Powered Window Air Conditioner is not new, but there is something that makes Briz tad different.
